Antivirus False Positives
A single antivirus engine currently flags the installer — an AI/heuristic detection, marked by a suffix like !ml or ml.score, not a real virus signature. This happens because Eclipse is unsigned and does things a launcher legitimately needs to: it launches Java, writes to your AppData folder, and updates itself. Zero signature-based engines detect anything, and code-signing (which clears the heuristic flag) is something we're actively working towards as the project grows.

Is Eclipse Launcher free?
Yes — completely free, with no ads, no paid tiers, and no feature held back behind a purchase. Mods, modpacks, skins, capes, and server hosting are all included. Donations are welcome and go towards running costs like the skin server and code signing, but nothing in the launcher depends on them.
Do I need to install Java myself?
No. Eclipse reads the Java version each Minecraft release requires and downloads a matching Adoptium runtime on demand — Java 8 for 1.16 and older, Java 17 for 1.17 through 1.20.4, Java 21 for 1.20.5 through 1.21.x, and Java 25 for 26.1 and newer. Runtimes are kept alongside the launcher, so a system Java install is never needed and never interfered with.
Can I play without a Minecraft account?
Yes. Offline accounts let you pick a username and play straight away — useful for singleplayer, LAN, and servers running in offline mode. Servers that verify accounts with Mojang still need a genuine Microsoft login, which Eclipse also supports. Note that offline accounts always use the default Minecraft skin.
How do custom skins and capes work?
Skins and capes are applied by an Eclipse account through the Customize page on this site, and appear in-game without touching your Minecraft profile. Microsoft accounts keep using their normal Mojang skin, and offline accounts show the default skin — so nobody can wear a skin belonging to a username they do not own.
How do I install mods and modpacks?
Open the launcher's modpack browser and install from CurseForge or Modrinth in one click. Eclipse sets up the right mod loader for you — Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt — and creates an isolated instance, so a modded setup can never break your vanilla worlds.
Do my friends need Eclipse to join a server I host?
No. Eclipse creates the server, opens a tunnel, and hands you an address to share — no port forwarding and no router configuration. Anyone on the same Minecraft version can join from any launcher, and only the person hosting needs Eclipse.
Why does Windows warn me when I run the installer?
Because the installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen shows its "Windows protected your PC" prompt for software it has not seen often. Choose More info, then Run anyway. The prompt fades as more people download each release, and a signing certificate is on the roadmap.
My antivirus flagged the download — is it safe?
It is a false positive from heuristic scanning, not a signature match. An unsigned launcher does several things malware also does: starts a Java process, writes to AppData, and updates itself. That behavioural pattern is what triggers AI-based detections, labelled with suffixes like !ml or ml.score. On the current build 58 of 59 engines report it completely clean, the one flag is a machine-learning guess, and no signature-based engine detects anything.
